  • Possibilities

Tonight one of the punks declared she wanted to learn to crochet. When I offered to teach her, her response was "I want to do more than just make a chain".
    Understood.
But I had to point out you can't do more till you learn to make the chain. Once you learn the chain you can do anything.
So we sat on the sofa in the library and I showed her how to make a chain and go in circles.

It wasn't as easy as she thought.

In time tho her chains will become even and steady and she will learn to make warm hats and rag rugs. Being the eco-conscious child she is, she has already been making 'plarn' from recycled plastic bags. What she will make of that, I have no idea, but sometimes she dwells in possibility more than I do.

Eldest has declared she wants to learn to knit or sew. Something to keep her hands busy. Somehow to create something out of almost nothing. Now that she is a mother to be, this appeals to her. It is what mothers do. The awakening of possibilities. The yearning to leave something behind that declares her existence to the world-something useful and warm.

My son has declared his spot in the world by learning to make furniture. It is rough hewn, cedar post stuff. He calls it manly, but I call it rustic and sweet. I get disgusted snorts for that, but it is what it is. I am the mama and I say so

They are all in their twenties and just learning their crafts. It has only been in the last year I have learned to crochet.  I wonder what we will accomplish a year from now?

    Better yet...

    what will you?

  • We are listening to the same cd. : )

This made me smile. Crafting is very important. I don't know what I will have accomplished in a year from now... but I am pretty positive I will have started all sorts of things, lol.

  • I have an aunt who is never caught without a needlepoint, cross-stitch, sewing, knitting or crochet project within 5 feet of her.  Right now she is working on teaching her 2 year old granddaughter to do needlepoint and has a whole schedule laid out for when to start teaching the rest of those disciplines.

As for me, I fully expect to still be trying to interrupt my aunt's projects and avoiding her attempts to get me involved in them.

  • Good thoughts! Handi crafts are always a better and more economical product than mass produced stuff. In this kind of economy they can be lifesavers. Nothing better for the self-esteem than to "make your own" :)  My daughter crochets baby blankets for the women's shelter. One son paints and another builds in wood, and iron. Blessings!

  • I just found out I need to learn to be an electrician. We just had a breaker go and it won't reset...it just so happens it's the receptacle for the window unit in our bedroom. SOOOOO.......
If I crocheted something I would probably end up with my hands crocheted into whatever I was making. Could I even crochet with these huge hands? Hopefully she will stick with it. Hey, when that son snorts at you, snort back

  • These crafts are so important . . . the things we make connect the generations . . .

  • Tell her that she can make some great carrying totes out of the "plarn"....I bought them when we were in Thailand 35 years ago...and they are still as useful as they were the day I bought them!!! Gee...I was green before it was fashionable!!! lol I would love to see some pictures of the "manly furniture"!!!
Have a great weekend my friend

  • I have learned to can tomatoes! The class was my mother's day gift this year.   And I'm about to go do so right now!  :)

  • I go to the library. I recycle. We make jam. We hem our own clothes.

  • Learning a new craft is always good. I wish I had more time to play and do do crafts. I have about 80 craft gifts that I need to get out the door...they need some special packing things done and then I could call that project done!!! Its taken me far longer then I expected, but somehow life keeps throwing me curve balls, and I just cannot keep up with all the crazy pitches coming my way!!! One day they will get to our local post office and then off to the world, but I am certain it will not be till after our vacation. Just the packing and the things I MUST get done are about to lay me out for good!!!  There is alot to think about and Gene is working every hour available and Cody has been to camp all week, not to mention another trip to the ER all night with Mama. Yep, I have been spread thin to say the least!

I do hope that the kids make some lovely things from the skills you are teaching them! I have never learned to crochet. My MIL does this, and has made some beautiful things. I have a king size spread that she made, but I have yet to use it. I will not let a pup claw get tangled in this lovely spread. It took almost 4 years to finish! One day I will use it!!!

Having a skill like this that is passed down from the Mother is mighty special.

    I love ya Chicky!!!

  • To have these skills passed  along are something that can never be taken away. Judi

  • once I went home and my sister had taught my little sister and brother to crochet with those great big sticks-it was so cute to see my little brother getting into it,too.

  • I have crocheting down, and sewing.  I will be canning for the first time in a few years (I have the time to do it this year).  Next year, I want to have learned how to weave...as for other accomplishments - who knows what the next year will bring?

  • Being able to use our hands to create opens us up to many possibilities. Miss A and I learned how to make paper beads this week.  Great fun together and maybe a present or two for the the grandma's as we go.

  • I think it is great that your kids are learning crafty things.  You are doing a great service to them, handing down skill and pride in doing something with just their two hands.

  • Punk learning to crochet, cool.

Eldest mother-to-be wanting to learn to sew or knit, neat and congrats.

Son's furniture, sweet (said in my 19 yr old's way!)

Kids learning something new, very wise.

Mom teaching the next generation...awww and wonderful!
